Women and the
Episcopal Church

Today
the Episcopal Church has a female Presiding Bishop and Saint Peter's
has a female rector, but it wasn't always so. For much of the history
of the church, women were denied participation in the governance and
ministry of the church. Women exercised important ministries in the
church.
The
session will examine the changing role ofwomen in the life and
witness of the Episcopal Church with particular emphasis on the
important role of the organization now known as the Episcopal
Church Women.

Seamen's Church Institute
The
Rev. Marge Lindstrom, Chaplain at Port Newark will discuss the ministry
of the Seamen's Church Institute and how we can support its ministry.
Founded in 1834 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, the Seamen's
Church Institute of New York & New Jersey (SCI) is the largest, most
comprehensive mariners' agency in North America. Annually, its chaplains
visit 3,400 vessels in the Port of New York and New Jersey and along
2,200 miles of America’s inland waterways. SCI's maritime education
facilities provide navigational training to nearly 1,600 mariners each
year through simulator-based facilities located in Houston, TX and
Paducah, KY. The Institute and its maritime attorneys are recognized
as leading advocates for merchant mariners.
